Arsenal have been sent a message by Red Bull Leipzig over January transfer target Dayot Upamecano – and it’s not good news for the Gunners.
Leipzig centre-back Upamecano is high on Arsenal’s wanted list with manager Mikel Arteta set to be given funds to improve the Gunners’ defence in the January window.
Upamecano, 21, is considered to be one of the most promising young defenders in Europe and is reportedly stalling over signing a new contract with Leipzig as he considers his future.
However, Leipzig are not keen to sell as the Bundesliga leaders target success domestically and in the Champions League.
The German club are said to have put an £80million price tag on Upamecano in a bid to fend off Arsenal’s interest.
And Leipzig even responded to a Gunners fan’s tweet to send a clear message they are not willing to sell.
The Arsenal fan posted a picture of himself checking his phones, with the message: “Me waiting for Upamecano to be announced.”
Leipzig tried to put the supporter out of his misery as the club’s social media team replied with a meme simply saying: “I’m afraid I’ve got some bad news.”
Despite Leipzig’s attempts to discourage them, Arsenal are expected to fast-track a move for Upamecano following the knee injury suffered by Calum Chambers against Chelsea on Sunday.
Arsenal desperately need to improve their defence, having conceded 30 goals from 21 Premier League games this season – jointly the highest in the top half of the division, along with north London rivals Tottenham.
