Eyebrows were raised during the FIFA Best Football Awards on Monday night when Juventus star Cristiano Ronaldo failed to make an appearance at the ceremony in Milan.
The likes of Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Luka Modric were just a number of the high-profile names present, and were all included in the Team of the Year.
However, only ten players were named in the team, with Ronaldo’s name not read out despite it being included in the squad.
The Portuguese superstar’s Juventus teammate, Matthijs de Ligt, was named in the lineup.
Juventus are in action in the Serie A against Brescia on Tuesday, and Ronaldo may well have decided against the short trip from Turin to Milan for the awards.
However, the 34-year-old has also been struggling with injury recently, and it was revealed by manager Maurizio Sarri that he was a doubt for the game against Brescia after suffering from muscle fatigue during the 2-1 win over Hellas Verona at the weekend.
Sarri said: “Cristiano has a little fatigue to the adductors. I don’t want to take any risk with injuries.”
Additionally, Sarri had no problem with his players attending, with De Ligt in attendance and included tomorrow.
As such, it appears that Ronaldo simply no-showed the event for two reasons: to focus on his recovery and also because he was aware that it wasn’t his night.
So, what did Ronaldo do instead?
Well he immersed himself in a nice book.
