Manchester United are lining up a bid for Inter Milan ace Milan Skriniar to solve their injury crisis.
Aymeric Laporte, regarded as City’s first-choice centre-back, has had a knee operation and is not expected back before the New Year.
This leaves just Nicolas Otamendi and John Stones as Pep Guardiola’s only two fit senior central defenders.
According to the Express, City want to bolster their options by signing Skriniar in January.
The Premier League champions are second in the league and cannot afford too many slip ups with leaders Liverpool off to a perfect start.
The City boss could opt to play defensive midfielders Rodri and Fernandinho into the back four as emergency centre-backs.
Another option is Kyle Walker who has played centre back in a back three for England.
Skriniar, 24, has previously been on City’s arch rivals Manchester United’s wishlist.
City will have to make do with that they have got until the transfer window opens again in January, however.
