Germany boss Joachim Low is confident Manchester City winger Leroy Sane will return from his knee injury in time for next summer’s European Championship.
The 23-year-old is expected to miss most of the season after damaging his anterior cruciate ligament during City’s Community Shield win over Liverpool a fortnight ago.
With the winger now set to undergo knee surgery in Austria this weekend, there is a possibility that the long injury lay-off could impact his chances of representing his country at Euro 2020.
However, despite expressing his disappointment at Sane’s injury, Germany head coach Low believes the City star will be ready when the international competition gets underway next June – provided that his side qualifies.
“We were very sad and downcast when we heard about it,” Low told DAZN (via Goal ).
“I had contact with Leroy. For him and his situation, of course, it was the worst possible time.
“We hope he will come back as soon as possible. He is a player of incredible quality and we wish him all the best.
“He will make it for the European Championship.”
Low was speaking during Friday’s Bundesliga opener between Bayern Munich and Hertha BSC, which saw defending champions Bayern held to a 2-2 draw at Allianz Arena.
Robert Lewandowski put Niko Kovac’s side ahead before two quickfire goals from Dodi Lukebakio and Marko Grujic gave Hertha a surprise lead at half time.
But Polish striker Lewandowski struck again – this time from the penalty spot – to ensure his side took away a point from their opening game.
Bayern had been heavily linked with a move for Man City star Sane before the winger’s injury seemingly ended their interest.
After the match, the German champions released a statement confirming that they have reached an agreement to sign Barcelona playmaker Philippe Coutinho.
The Brazilian is set to join on an initial season-long loan deal, with Bayern possessing the option to make the move permanent at the end of the campaign.
Former Liverpool star Coutinho, 27, is expected to travel to Munich in the coming days to undergo medical and finalise the deal.
