Roma want to snap up Tottenham’s £25million-rated centre-back Toby Alderweireld this summer.
The Serie A club are hunting two new defenders ahead of the upcoming season and have approached the north Londoners.
They are understood, however, not to have made a formal offer with Alderweireld available at his bargain price until July 26th when a clause in his contract expires.
So far Roma are the only club to have expressed an interest in the 30-year-old who has just 12 months left on his contract.
Their best hope of landing the Belgian rests on a potential swap deal that could see midfielder Nicolo Zaniolo going to north London.
The 20-year-old Italian midfielder impressed for Roma last season and Spurs are understood to be keen.
As things stand, Alderweireld is on course be on Tottenham’s pre-season trip to Asia, which begins against Juventus in Singapore on July 21.
The defender, who has previously been linked with Manchester United, could be one of a number of departures at Tottenham this summer with Christian Eriksen also believed to be keen on an exit.
Spurs midfielder Eriksen, 27, admitted publicly over a month ago that he wanted a “new challenge” in the hope that would spur Real Madrid into turning their interest into a concrete bid.
But Real Madrid are still in a difficult position themselves as they want Manchester United’s Paul Pogba and may not be able to afford both players while also having to offload some of their squad.
It leaves Eriksen uncertain whether Real Madrid will come in for him as it is understood that the Denmark midfielder would prefer to go to Spain rather than move to Old Trafford with United also watching developments.
Eriksen has been given extra time off before reporting back up with Spurs as Denmark had two end-of-season internationals with Republic of Ireland and Georgia.
