Cristiano Ronaldo was unable to haul his Juventus side into the Champions League semi-finals as they suffered a shock defeat to Ajax on Tuesday night.
The Old Lady were beaten 2-1 in Turin on what was a hugely disappointing night after the stunning signing of Ronaldo last summer in a bid to secure European glory.
The Serie A champions-in-waiting were below par all night with Ronaldo unable to come to their rescue as he did in the last-16 against Atletico Madrid.
And his mother, Dolores Aveiro, has revealed how her son reacted to their surprise exit from the competition he has won three years in a row with Real Madrid.
“He still scored a goal, but he did not get more than that, he was sad, of course he liked to go to the Champions League final, but it’s for the next,” she told SportTV, according to O Jogo.
“He was sad, but it is as he says, ‘mother, I do no miracles’, and it is true.
“The championship is going well, we missed a bit of luck in the Champions League, but we can not do anything. Life goes on.”
Speaking after their defeat, he said: “Ronaldo has given us a lot over the course of the campaign, but when you reach the quarter-final, you need every player.
“I’ve always said that to win the Champions League, you need to reach a certain stage in good form and with good fitness levels.
“We’ve been in a bit of an emergency situation for a while and that can only be sustained for so long.
“We were missing four or five players tonight. Daniele Rugani and Leonardo Bonucci had good games for 50 minutes or so, but we lost our unity and organisation, giving Ajax the advantage.”
