Real Madrid full back Dani Carvajal had admitted: 'It's been a s*** season' for the Spanish club

Real Madrid were knocked out of the Champions League  by Ajax and full-back Dani Carvajal admitted: ‘It’s been a s*** season.’

Brilliant Ajax beat Madrid 4-1 on the night to go through 5-3 on aggregate.

The season is over for Gareth Bale although for once he might escape the blame as attention turns to the club’s failure to sign a replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo last summer.

One man they did sign was Thibaut Courtois but he was beaten four times on a miserable that sums up his first season away from Chelsea.

Full-back Carvajal said: ‘We have to be profesional. We have to not hide.

We have to show our faces but we know that we have had a s**t season.

‘This is my worst night of my career. In a week, we lost it all and we lost it all at home. They were better, they deserved to go through.’

Ajax coach Erik Ten Hag said: ‘We played with bravery. We wanted to get at them and we did it brilliantly.

Asked if the believed Real Madrid had been over-confident in the first leg with Sergio Ramos picking up a deliberate booking to miss the second leg, Hag said: ‘We certainly made the most of it.’
