Atletico Madrid defender Diego Godin is set to join Inter Milan at the end of the season as Manchester United look set to miss out again.
The Uruguay international has undergone a medical in secret and will move to the San Siro on a free in the summer.
Sky Sport Italia understand that Godin, 32, has signed a two-year deal worth £3.9million-a-season, which could yet rise to £5.2m including bonuses.
But Godin is available again after Atletico were unable to follow through on their promise of a new contract.
Despite their best efforts United failed to sign a new defender in the summer after failed pursuits of Harry Maguire, Toby Alderweireld and Jerome Boateng.
As a result the club have retained an interest in Godin but they look set to be snubbed for a second time.
Though in the twilight of his career, Godin still remains among the best defenders in world football.
His produced a spate of impressive performances at the 2018 World Cup for quarter-finalists Uruguay – including keeping Cristiano Ronaldo quiet in the last-16 win over Portugal – leading to interest from Juventus.
The veteran was then named in the team of the tournament alongside Ronaldo and golden boot winner Harry Kane.
