Manchester United are closing in on the signing of Roma defender Kostas Manolas, according to reports.
The Red Devils are keen to thrash out a deal this month to avoid losing out on the 27-year-old when his £30.75m release clause activates in the summer.
The Old Trafford giants were in the market for a centre-back in the summer, but failed to strengthen the defence despite strong links to the likes of Harry Maguire and Toby Alderweireld.
The latter will be available for just £25m in the summer after Tottenham took up the option to extend his contract until 2020, but United are keen to bring in a new face in January to aid their top four push.
United have been strongly linked to Porto ace Eder Militao this month, but Marca, per Metro, insist Manolas is the man the Old Trafford hierarchy are looking to bring in.
Manolas name-dropped the Red Devils when speaking about a potential transfer back in the summer, saying: “It’s only natural you want to play for the biggest clubs, like Barcelona, Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich.”
Interim United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer previously said he does not expect any new faces at Old Trafford in January, but insisted he would welcome any additions if club chiefs saw fit.
“I don’t expect anyone to come in but obviously if the club have targeted and identified a few and I think they might fit here, I’ll give my thumbs up. But it’s not just my decision,” the Norwegian said.
