Unai Emery has confirmed that Arsenal are in talks to extend the contract of star left-back Nacho Monreal.
The Spanish international has just one year left on his current Gunners deal, with Barcelona reportedly monitoring his situation in North London.
But speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of his side’s clash against Newcastle, Emery revealed he is desperate for the club to tie the 32-year-old down.
The ex-Paris Saint-Germain boss said: “First, I knew Nanco Monreal in Spain when he was playing for Malaga. I knew him.
“After 2 months now, I can say I am happy with him. He is 32 years old, physically the performance with us, Nacho is playing with a very good level.
“The reason for that, for me, we need to find a new contract with him to stay together with the Arsenal team.”
Monreal – who has netted once for Arsenal this season – recently revealed he is very happy at the Emirates.
He said: “At the moment we are talking with the club.
“I’ve always said I am really happy, I feel very happy playing for Arsenal. I came six years ago. I have a good relationship with them.
“We are in contact in any moment so don’t worry about that. I am happy here. That is the most important thing.”
