Pep Guardiola Urges Benjamin Mendy To Work More On His Game And Spend Less Time On Social Media

French left back Benjamin Mendy claimed two assists as Manchester City won 2-0 at Arsenal

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola admitted that Benjamin Mendy can be a frustrating player to work with after Sunday’s 2-0 win at Arsenal.

Left back Mendy, starting just his fifth Premier League game following an injury-hit debut campaign, was excellent against the Gunners and assisted both goals.

Guardiola praised the Frenchman’s energy after the match but also urged him to focus more on improving as a player and less on social media.

‘Mendy is Mendy,’ said Guardiola in quotes which were shared via Twitter. ‘Sometimes we want to kill him and sometimes you think wow what a player we have.

‘He gives us energy. Mendy has a lot of things to improve and hopefully we can convince him to forget a little bit the social media and improve a few things.’

Mendy, who has become a big hit with City fans by keeping them amused on the internet, showed no sign of changing his ways as he replied to his manager’s message… via Twitter.

He retweeted Guardiola’s quote along with the word ‘Oops’ and a nervous laughter emoji – but he then wrote another reply which read: ‘I will I promise’.

Amusingly, Mendy replied to his manager's message via social media with a Twitter post

Mendy had earlier tweeted: ‘Good victory to start the season. Everything not perfect but I need to find the feet & the rythm again (says the guy with 2 assists). Thank you guys for the love’.

He also posted a picture on Instagram with rock star and City superfan Noel Gallagher after the match.

Guardiola was pleased with the overall performance of his team against Arsenal, who were managed for the first time by new boss Unai Emery.

The City boss explained: ‘I think going away to the Emirates is always so complicated. Especially in the first game when Arsenal have a new manager.

‘We played a high level considering the lack of physical condition for many of the players who arrived back lack after the World Cup. Our performance was good but this is just the first step so we keep going.’
