Luka Modric will tell Real Madrid that he wants to leave for Serie A giants Inter Milan this summer.
Luciano Spalletti has set his sights set on acquiring the Croatian midfielder, who is open to the move, according reports.
Inter have prepared a bumper annual salary of £10million for the player but new Real manager Julen Lopetegui is adamant that he is going nowhere.
However, according to Gazzetta dello Sport, Modric will inform Real president Florentino Perez that he wants to leave before the transfer window closes.
Italian reports suggest Inter want to make a statement signing in midfield as they aim to topple Juve at the summit of Serie A next season.
They already have three Croatian players – Marcelo Brozovic, Ivan Perisic and new loan signing Sime Vrsaljko from Atletico Madrid.
It follows Cristiano Ronaldo swapping the Spanish capital for Italy after agreeing a move to Juventus following a trophy-laden spell at the Bernabeu.
Lopetegui is confident Modric, who has won four Champions League titles with Real, will remain at the Bernabeu despite the interest.
‘The president has already given an answer, I don’t have much else to add,’ Lopetegui said on Sunday.
‘Modric’s an extraordinary player, we await him with open arms. I talked to him after his excellent World Cup and we’ll see if he can play on August 15 (against Atletico Madrid in the European Super Cup), our first big objective of the season.
‘I told him he was a player I’m passionate about, I love him and he knows it. He’ll be happy with the proposal he receives here.
‘He’ll be happy to play football, like he already was, at Real Madrid. Luka is a Madrid player and will continue to be, I have no doubt. We’ve enjoyed having him and we’ll continue to do so.’
