Lionel Messi believes the signing of Antoine Griezmann could help fire Barcelona back to Champions League success.
The Catalan giants have won the tournament just once in the last seven seasons, while fierce rivals Real Madrid have lifted the trophy four times in that period.
And for Messi, the signing of the Atletico Madrid forward — who has long been linked with a switch to the Nou Camp — could be the difference.
‘I am in agreement that to win the Champions League again we need to have the best players. And Griezmann is one of them,’ Messi told Sport.
‘If the club sign him, brilliant. I don’t know if he’s the priority. That depends on the signing committee and the coach.
‘I can only say that to win the Champions League you have to have the best players. And he is very good.’
Barcelona already boast a wealth of attacking options in Messi, Luis Suarez, Ousmane Dembele and Philippe Coutinho.
But despite his side cruising to the La Liga title, losing just once all season, Ernesto Valverde knows they need more in preparation for facing Europe’s elite next season.
Griezmann has said he will clarify his club future prior to the start of the World Cup on June 14.
‘It’s good that you’re taking an interest,’ Griezmann said after France’s 1-1 friendly draw with the USA.
‘There’s a week to go. I think we will find out this week.’
