Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius reveals he endured a sleepless night after a nightmare Champions League final against Real Madrid.
The German goalkeeper was vilified by his own supporters after two huge mistakes cost Liverpool dearly as they fell to a 3-1 defeat.
Taking to Twitter having gathered his thoughts on Sunday afternoon, Karius said: ‘Haven’t really slept until now… the scenes are still running through my head again and again.
‘I’m infinitely sorry to my teammates, for you fans, and for all the staff. I know that I messed it up with the two mistakes and let you all down.
‘As I said I’d just like to turn back the time but that’s not possible. It’s even worse as we all felt that we could have beaten Real Madrid and we were in the game for a long time…
‘Thank you to our unbelievable fans who came to Kiev and held my back, even after the game. I don’t take that for granted and once again it showed me what a big family we are. Thank you and we will come back stronger.’
The first setback came six minutes after the interval at the NSC Olimpiyskiy Stadium when an eager Karius attempted to roll the ball out to centre-back Dejan Lovren and watched on in horror as it instead deflected in off the outstretched foot of Karim Benzema.
His second – a goal that put the game beyond any doubt – saw a long range effort from substitute Gareth Bale squirm through his hands.
While large factions of the Liverpool fan-base tore into Karius, some praised his immediacy in fronting up to the supporters, hands up by way of an apology as the tears flowed.
