Nemanja Matic has backed Paul Pogba to become Manchester United’s main man following the Frenchman’s superb derby day performance.
Pogba scored twice as United fought back from 2-0 down to win 3-2 and postpone Manchester City’s title celebrations.
The Frenchman has been heavily criticised since his £89million move to Old Trafford, but Matic feels his fellow midfielder is on an upward trend.
He said: “With his personality, Paul needs to be our main player because he plays in that position and he needs to take responsibility.
“Don’t forget that he has had an injury this season – he was out for three months and it’s not easy to come back after that.
“The people always expect a lot from you when you play for Man United – we know that this is normal. But he is still young and he can still improve.
“He showed character and personality. If you saw him in the last 10 minutes, he was fighting a lot for the team and helping the team.”
Pogba’s strikes were his first since November and helped seal the Red Devils’ seventh domestic win in a row.
But Matic also praised the rest of his teammates as United deprived City of the chance to win the league against their rivals.
“I think Chris Smalling was the main star,” Matic said.
