Fashola Wants Nigeria To Bid For 2026 World Cup

Fashola says Nigerians should be proud of Nigeria

Former governor of Lagos state, Babatunde Raji Fashola, has urged Nigeria to bid for the 2026 World Cup cos he believes the country has what it takes to host the prestigious tournament.

The 2026 World Cup will have 48 countries competing for the prestigious 4-year tournament, 16 teams more than the initial present 32-team format. Fashola believes that the increased number of teams the 2026 event will witness will make it too difficult for a single country to host the tournament alone.

He advised that Nigeria should submit a joint bid with Morocco to host the competition.

There’s currently a joint bid from the USA, Canada and Mexico, which has been submitted to World football governing body, FIFA for consideration.

Fashola said, “Morocco is bidding to host the 2026 World Cup, Nigeria should have jointly bid with Morocco because we can do it.

“With the expanded format of the World Cup, it will now be too expensive for one country to host it.

Like we did when we hosted the 2009 FIFA U17 World Cup when the gauntlet is thrown at us, we will rise to the occasion.

“The indomitable, undying spirit of the Nigerian will come to the fore when we have a deadline to meet.

“We will clean up our house to welcome visitors from around the world.”

The Super Eagles of Nigeria will be playing in Group D against Iceland, Croatia and Argentina at the 2018 World Cup In Russia. The Super Eagles will play its first game of the prestigious competition against Croatia.
