Barcelona legend Messi sat out of the game, and Friday night’s 2-0 victory over Italy, due to fatigue in his hamstring and adductor – following a gruelling La Liga campaign.
The superstar observed the rout from a hospitality box with teammate and West Ham star Manuel Lanzini and showed a range of emotions including frustration, disbelief and pure exasperation.
But soon after Isco had completed his treble in the 74th minute and the embarrassment was almost complete, Messi was seen walking back into the box.
There was a potential Messi would face La Roja after training on Monday, but declared himself unfit.
After failing to feature against the Italian’s, he said: “I always feel like playing but there is a long way to the World Cup.
“I always want to play, but I came here with discomfort.”
Argentina have been drawn with Iceland, Croatia and Nigeria at this summer’s football extravaganza and will be hoping Messi will be fit enough to play regularly in Russia.
