Arsene Wenger begged Alexis Sanchez to stay at Arsenal by telling him: “You’re my best player.”
The Arsenal boss lost his Chilean striker to Manchester United in a January move which saw Henrikh Mkhitaryan go the other way.
Sanchez, 29, told Chilevision: “Arsene Wenger was very fond of me.
“He told me ‘I want you to stay ‘cos you are the best player in this team’.
“However, I wanted to grow and shine more as a Chilean [by becoming the first Chilean to play for Man United].
“Arsene understood my decision and wished me luck. We have no ill feelings towards each other.”
Sanchez has struggled since joining United, scoring just one Premier League goal against Huddersfield last month.
