Chinese Super Club Beijing Guoan have confirmed the signing of Congo international Cedric Bakambu from Spanish side Villarreal CF.
Bakambu was presented as a new player of the Beijing Guoan on Thursday.
Beijing Guoan refused to confirm Bakambu’s reported €40 million (US$49.3 million) signing on Wednesday.
Guoan’s failure to confirm Bakambu’s signing has raised questions over the move by the 26-year-old, which would be the most expensive so far in the current Chinese transfer window.
The lack of clarity comes after the Chinese Football Association sternly warned clubs not to try to get round its 100 per cent tax on transfer fees for foreign players, which was imposed to halt a dizzying series of record signings.
Under the rule, Chinese clubs buying foreign players must pay an amount equivalent to the transfer fee into a fund designed to bolster youth soccer.
It appears that Bakambu is now the most expensive African footballer of all time after Beijing Guoan move.
Bakambu spent last two seasons and a half at Villarreal CF where he scored 46 goals in 101 games.
Beijing Guoan finished ninth in the 16-team Chinese Super League last season under German coach Roger Schmidt.
