Jose Mourinho heaped praise on Zlatan Ibrahimovic after the star forward carried Manchester United to EFL Cup glory on Sunday.
The Red Devils beat Southampton 3-2 at Wembley with Ibrahimovic nodding a late winner after opening the scoring with a sublime free-kick earlier in the game.
‘I think honestly he (Ibrahimovic) won the game for us because he was outstanding,’ Mourinho said after becoming the first manager to win a trophy in his debut season at Old Trafford.
The Portuguese added that Ibrahimovic’s contribution was all the more important because of how well their opponents had played.
‘I can see a couple of strong performances. For example, Paul Pogba was a similar level but he (Ibrahimovic) was outstanding in a match where our opponents were better than us for long periods in a game where I think they deserved to go to extra-time. They don’t deserve to lose in 90 minutes.
‘Between one team and another today I feel if we go to extra time we would be in trouble. The fuel was in their legs, not ours.’
‘I’m a bit emotional, yes,’ he added. It’s not easy to win title, not easy to cope with that pressure that I put myself under with my career.
‘Yes it was a game I was feeling was difficult. I want to pay the homage they deserve to Southampton. The only thing I can say we have the cup in our hands but we should be now playing extra time.
